The Hanuman Chalisa is one of the most well-known and revered devotional hymns in Hinduism. It is a powerful prayer dedicated to Lord Hanuman Ji, who is a central character in the epic Ramayana and an ardent devotee of Lord Rama. Author and Origin The Hanuman Chalisa Lyrics were composed by the great 16th-century poet-saint, Goswami Tulsidas. Tulsidas is also the author of the epic poem Ramcharitmanas, a retelling of the Ramayana in the Awadhi language. It is believed that Tulsidas wrote the Hanuman Chalisa Lyrics while imprisoned by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, and that its recitation brought about a miraculous release. Structure and Meaning The word "Chalisa" is derived from the Hindi word chālīs, which means "forty." The hymn consists of 40 verses (chaupais) that praise the strength, wisdom, and devotion of Hanuman Ji. These verses are preceded by two introductory couplets (dohas) and conclude with a final couplet. The hymn is a lyrical and beautiful description of Hanuman Ji's qualities and exploits. It is divided into several thematic parts: Introductory Dohas: The hymn begins by invoking the blessings of the Guru and Lord Rama, setting the stage for the praise of Hanuman Ji. Hanuman Ji's Character and Divine Form: The initial verses describe Hanuman Ji's divine attributes, including his physical appearance, immense strength, and profound wisdom. He is hailed as the "ocean of knowledge and virtue." Hanuman Ji's Service to Lord Rama: The central part of the Chalisa recounts Hanuman Ji's heroic deeds in the service of Lord Rama. This includes his journey to Lanka as Rama's messenger, his ability to shrink and grow in size, his setting of Lanka ablaze, and his bringing of the magical Sanjivani herb to revive Lakshmana. Hanuman Ji as a Protector and Bestower of Blessings: The later verses focus on the benefits of reciting the Chalisa. It is believed that chanting the hymn can provide protection from ghosts and evil spirits, remove obstacles, cure diseases, and grant strength, courage, and wisdom. Conclusion: The final couplet is a humble request to Hanuman Ji to reside in the heart of the devotee, along with Lord Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana. Significance and Benefits of Recitation For millions of Hindus worldwide, the Hanuman Ji Chalisa is more than just a hymn; it is a source of comfort, strength, and spiritual power. Its recitation is a daily ritual for many, particularly on Tuesdays and Saturdays, which are considered auspicious days for worshipping Hanuman Ji. Some of the widely held beliefs about its benefits include: Overcoming Fear and Anxiety: Chanting the Chalisa is believed to instill courage and help devotees overcome fear and anxiety. Removing Obstacles: Hanuman Ji is known as Sankat Mochan (the reliever of difficulties), and reciting the Chalisa is thought to help remove obstacles and challenges from one's life. Protection from Negative Energies: It is believed to ward off evil spirits, ghosts, and negative influences. Spiritual Growth: The Chalisa emphasizes the importance of devotion (bhakti) and humility, guiding the practitioner toward a deeper spiritual connection. Gaining Strength and Wisdom: By meditating on Hanuman Ji's qualities of strength, intellect, and selfless service, devotees seek to cultivate these same virtues within themselves.
